The Cluster Excellence Competition of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) was set up in 2007. Partners from the scientific and business communities should be able to convert their ideas into new improvements, products and services faster, and better utilize their and better use their skills and competence. The Ministry sponsored this competition to strengthen Germany's innovation policy. With “Software Innovation for the Digital Enterprise” Europe’s largest Software Cluster convinced the jury in January 2010. The Software-Cluster spans centers in Darmstadt, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe, Saarbrücken and Walldorf. The Software Cluster is specialized in the development of „Emergent Software” and pursue these objectives. The Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) sponsors a total funding of over €80 million. Numerous projects within the cluster region are dealing with the development of tomorrow's corporate software. This includes large joint projects, which are being carried out within the scope of the BMBF's "Leading-Edge Cluster" competition "Software innovations for digital companies”, as well as numerous individual projects that are being financed via other areas, but which have the same characteristics: they display a great deal of innovate potential, and most of the cooperation partners are based within the cluster region.
