Bibsys
The bibliographic system, developed with Software AG’s Natural application engineering environment and Adabas database management system, supports administrative functions for acquisition, circulation control, cataloguing, classification, and interlibrary loan, plus search and order functions for end-users.
The Challenge
The original application of Bibsys was terminal based. Opening this to the public via internet using middleware, has vastly improved the popularity of the system. The Solution
Adabas is excellently suited to bibliographic data, which cannot be
handled adequately by a pure relational database,” notes operations
manager Haakon Alstad. “A major strength is its support of multiple
value fields, that can store multiple orders, titles, etc. in a
single record. In a relational database these would require
separate records and tables. Our applications are extremely I/O
intensive”. The biggest Adabas file has more than 300 million
records says operations manager Haakon Alstad. The Benefits
The University of Bergen, for example, has found that since putting online the 290,000 older books listed in their card catalogues, loan activity has increased dramatically. BIBSYS users save trips to the local library, because books can be ordered from home or office and are delivered free of charge by mail anywhere in Norway.
Customer Statement
BIBSYS has put its first Tamino-based application – a historical photography collection – into web-based
operation in june 2002 and are considering migrating the Adabas data into Tamino.
