Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Steinmetz from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Darmstadt University of Technology discusses selected research topics of his Multimedia Communications Lab (KOM) in the field of service-oriented architectures (SOA).
An increased flexibility and availability will become more important for the competitiveness of enterprises. In the context of highly distributed services-based systems, the fulfillment of quality of service requirements and their optimization has to be ensured.
The integration of aligned security mechanisms becomes crucial in cross-organizational interactions. Advantages such as agility and interoperability gained through the use of the SOA paradigm must not be compromised by rigid security infrastructures for example.
To address these challenges in a controlled manner, a dedicated SOA governance approach is necessary. This includes for example the introduction of special roles, responsibilities, reference processes, and metrics.
