Architecture Populating & Modeling

Content is king, so fill up your repository

Quickly capture architecture descriptions and store them in a central repository using ARIS IT Architect or Designer and also tools such as ARIS Express and ARIS IT Inventory. Business and IT architects & analysts can do this with little effort and training thanks to integration technology, state of the art user interface and reference content.

Automatically populating structured content

Most attempts to manage an architecture using typical office tools like Excel, Visio, Word and PowerPoint simply fail. Use ARIS IT Architect & Designer, instead, for a fail-safe approach.

We help assure your success, in part, by automatically populating your central architecture repository in a number of ways. You can:

  • Import information from Excel tables, Visio diagrams and other office tools
  • Migrate content using powerful ARIS scripts
  • Bring in content from external sources, such as project portfolio management tools, service registries or configuration management systems. Count on ready-to-use connectivity to BMC Atrium configuration management system and Software AG’s service registry, CentraSite

Feed the EA repository from different sources

Linking external content

Architecturally relevant content is often stored in unstructured formats, such as images, PDF, Word or PowerPoint. Using ARIS IT Architect or Designer, architects and analysts can easily embed these documents into their architectural deliverables using OLE mechanism.

You can quickly link content stored in external document management systems with architecture descriptions, thanks to adapters to systems like Microsoft SharePoint, OpenText LiveLink, EMC Documentum and Alfresco available with ARIS Platform.

Manual populating & modeling

Using ARIS IT Architect or Designer user interface, you can easily capture and store architecture descriptions in the ARIS repository. You can create a catalog of objects with a simple “copy & paste” from Excel or by typing in object names. You also can use a matrix to create or re-use objects as well as interconnect them.

Leverage best-of-breed ARIS modeling capabilities to create an architecture description from scratch. You can do this by graphically modeling objects and their relationships in one of many predefined or tailored diagram types—for example, an application interaction diagram or solution roll-out project plan.

Use Web-based forms in ARIS IT Inventory to capture and maintain a portfolio of applications, technologies, projects, services, demands and requirements to create the necessary informational foundation in your repository.

Frameworks & standards

Nowadays, you can use a broad number of frameworks to structure and capture architecture content. Using ARIS IT Architect or Designer, architects and analysts can adopt standard frameworks like Architecture Content Framework (ACF) from The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) or ArchiMate. ARIS TOGAF and ARIS ArchiMate Modeler speed up your adoption of these standards and help you embed them into an organization-specific architecture framework.

You also can leverage high-level structuring frameworks, such as Zachman or FEAF as well as detailed industry-specific frameworks, such as NAF, MODAF, DODAF or FrameworX of TeleManagement Forum. Proprietary architecture frameworks like SEAF of SAP or IAF of Cap Gemini were successfully implemented using ARIS IT Architect.
