The music industry’s response to the overall situation has been a very rigorous policy of consolidation as well as a strategy of putting all their usual business processes and procedures under the microscope. One of the things Sony Music Entertainment in Germany looked at closely was the operation of their central GRAM distribution system. The company uses GRAM to control the entire logistics chain for orders, storage and delivery for the Sony companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as other partners.
Sony’s music division has been using an Adabas/Natural based IT distribution system called GRAM since 1989. This highly integrated solution is used in Sony’s German, Austrian and Swiss locations. As part of a project to consolidate its business activities in Berlin, it set about finding an alternative solution for operation of this mission-critical application, previously operated in-house in Frankfurt.
In the fall of 2003, Software AG’s Application Management Services completely took over operation of the GRAM application and the associated satellite systems from Sony. The arrangement covers not only 24/7 operation of the data center, but also Data Base Administration and change management services for the outsourced systems.

"It only took a few months to confirm that outsourcing the operation of our central GRAM application to Software AG was exactly the right decision. Application Management Services, with their business process and product expertise and their powerful data center infrastructure, have definitely made life a whole lot easier for us."
