Excerpt from the first chapter:

Electronic business is not an option. It is a matter of survival!

Companies that wish to continue to be successful in times of global trading and constant change coordinate their business processes optimally with one another. XML plays a key role because—in contrast to the introduction of other technology standards before it—within two and a half years, most people became familiar with the benefits offered by XML.

Many IT policymakers, managers and developers at companies are well aware of the importance of the XML standard and are actively in the process of implementing the idea of opening up their enterprises to global trade by means of electronic business processes.
