Highlights of Software AG’s history
Birth of software industry
Following a decision by the US government that software and hardware need to be invoiced separately, IBM announces that starting January 1, 1970 they will no longer invoice their software as part of their hardware and operating systems: The software industry is born!
Software AG founded
Six young employees at the consulting firm AIV (Institut für Angewandte Informationsverarbeitung) establish Software AG in Darmstadt. Software AG is one of the first software-only vendors worldwide, hence the name and spirit of independence. One of the founders is Peter Schnell, who goes on to become long-serving CEO of the company and founder of the Software AG Foundation.
Peter Schnell installs the first version of the database system he developed, Adabas (adaptable database system), which becomes the bedrock of Software AG's success. Still among the fastest commercially available databases on the planet.
Software AG in North America founded
Software AG of North America is founded in Reston, Virginia. It is Software AG's first office outside Germany. Some of the first North American-based customers are New York City Council, the Massachusetts Mutual insurance company, and Consumer Gas in Toronto all using ADABAS.

First International User Group founded
Product groups merge to form Software AG Users' Group
Software AG moves
… into its new campus for 500 employees in Darmstadt, Germany. The extraordinary architectural design of the building creates an extremely employee-friendly work environment. The building is expanded in the late 1980s.
Software AG Foundation
Peter Schnell establishes the Software AG Foundation, which is an anchor investor, holding about 34 percent of the company's shares.
Entire Integration Tools launched
Entire lets users safeguard existing investments as they gradually build up a client-server environment in which systems from different manufacturers are integrated.

… and focuses his full attention on the Software AG Foundation.
Launch of EntireX
With the extension of Entire to include DCOM, EntireX provides a basis for distributing and integrating applications over complex and heterogeneous IT structures and allows the applications to communicate with each other either locally or via networks.
Software AG introduces Bolero, a software platform based on Java technology.
Software AG is listed
… on the Frankfurt stock exchange on April 26 in what was at the time the world's biggest-ever software industry IPO.
The Tamino XML Platform is the world's first product platform entirely based on XML.
Arnd Zinnhardt is appointed Software AG's Chief Financial Officer. Today, he is one of the longest-serving CFOs in Germany.
Karl-Heinz Streibich becomes Software AG's CEO.
"Move your feet to give a hand" launched
Since the launch of our "Move your Feet" campaign, our colleagues around the world have contributed more than 100,000 km, with Software AG, the Software AG Foundation and the employee representatives on the Supervisory Board donating a certain amount per kilometer to different charity organizations every year.
webMethods, Inc. is aquired
With a deal valued at $546 million, this acquisition is one of the largest pure-software deals in the history of the European IT industry, and launches Software AG into a leading position in integration and BPM.
SV Darmstadt 98
Software AG becomes the main sponsor of SV Darmstadt 98 sports club and demonstrates the company's engagement and close ties with the region.
