If the engine is full, we need a bigger engine, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In good news for your&nbsp;mainframe&nbsp;TCO, the answer is&nbsp;<em>not necessarily.<\/em>&nbsp;In fact, many batch problems&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;capacity problems at all\u2014they\u2019re&nbsp;peak problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\" id=\"h-the-peak-myth-nbsp-it-s-nbsp-not-a-capacity-problem-nbsp-nbsp\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><strong>The peak myth:&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;not a capacity problem&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A CPU at peak capacity is a city deadlocked during rush hour.&nbsp;Too many vehicles trying to squeeze through the same narrow bottleneck&nbsp;turns&nbsp;the highway into a parking lot. But with proper planning\u2014and&nbsp;a few&nbsp;express lanes\u2014traffic can flow once again.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Batch peaks&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;necessarily a sign that your&nbsp;mainframe is full.&nbsp;Instead, they could be hinting that your GP engines are being&nbsp;utilized&nbsp;inefficiently.&nbsp;Simply adding more GP capacity might&nbsp;relieve&nbsp;bottlenecks&nbsp;in the short term, but&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;akin to&nbsp;widening&nbsp;the highway&nbsp;when there are easier solutions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-express-lane-strategy-enter-the-nbsp-ziip-nbsp\"><strong>The express lane strategy: Enter the&nbsp;zIIP&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the GP engines are the standard city streets, the&nbsp;IBM&nbsp;zIIP&nbsp;(System z Integrated Information Processor) is the express lane.
