The power of OpenVMS
OpenVMS is designed for mission-critical environments, offering high reliability, availability, and serviceability. It supports disaster-tolerant, multi-site clusters and allows for hardware upgrades without downtime, making it ideal for organizations that require stability and uninterrupted service. Key technologies within OpenVMS include RMS (a fast file storage technology), Oracle Rdb (a fully relational database), and Oracle CODASYL DBMS (a multi-user database management system for environments that demand high availability and throughput).
By integrating OpenVMS into your digital ecosystem, you can connect it with applications across your enterprise, enabling data to flow seamlessly between new apps, cloud platforms, and systems. This eliminates the need for expensive migrations to new platforms and allows you to leverage decades of investment in your OpenVMS applications.
How CONNX can help
What are the business benefits of integrating OpenVMS with CONNX?
Deliver integration projects faster at lower cost
Unlock enterprise data across your organization by simplifying SQL access to legacy OpenVMS applications, making it quickly and cost-effectively available to key applications, BI systems, and web front ends.
Accelerate all your mid-range and mainframe data integration projects
Beyond OpenVMS, CONNX enables easy access to Adabas, Db2®, IMS, VSAM, Datacom, and other legacy and non-relational systems. CONNX DB Adapters provide read/write SQL data access to all sources supporting ODBC, OLE DB, JDBC®, J2EE®, and .NET® technologies. You can easily deliver access to web tools including Visual Basic, C, C++, Java, Python, PHP, and .NET.
Maintain security
Ensure security of sensitive data with controlled access. Manage multiple database logins while securing access to each system. Each system can have varying levels of permission, requiring a unique username and password for every datebase. However, we can simplify the process by providing a single login, allowing us to manage access to each individual database on your behalf.
Improve decision-making
Respond faster with insights based on a flow of real-time and near real-time data from OpenVMS and other databases through a single platform.
Leverage your valuable legacy technology platforms
Connect your OpenVMS data to new data warehouses, web apps, business intelligence tools, analytics, big data, and cloud platforms.
What does this all mean?
- Gain real-time access to mission-critical data on OpenVMS, and faster turnaround times on reports, so you can respond and react to changing business conditions.
- Free COBOL programmers from the burden of writing new queries so they can focus on more complex programming projects.
- CONNX’s distributed architecture reduces system strain while running queries and enables incremental data synchronization, avoiding resource-heavy bulk updates.
- Reports no longer need to be scheduled at night, enabling other jobs to run during a tight batch window.
- No modifications to existing OpenVMS applications are needed, ensuring faster deployment and maintaining data integrity.
CONNX: The ideal solution for OpenVMS data integration
CONNX is the leading data management solution that simplifies data access, virtualization, and movement across legacy, cloud, and hybrid systems. Easily use your enterprise data across apps and platforms to become data-driven faster, with less cost and risk.
Quickly access, move, and replicate OpenVMS data
CONNX connects OpenVMS and a wide range of databases, including legacy, relational, big data, and cloud across platforms like mainframe, OpenVMS, iSeries (AS/400), Linux®, and Windows®. It enables seamless data access and migration to modern platforms like big data and the cloud. Whether you need to integrate legacy systems or implement specific data solutions, CONNX is the ideal platform.
Accelerate digital initiatives with data access, replication, and movement
CONNX offers data access, virtualization, and data movement, in one integrated environment.
- Data access is the ability to retrieve, modify, or delete data from your current IT-systems in any location. This is important because your applications need to source data from a range of sources to enable reporting, supply chain management, business intelligence, analytics, and other functions.
- Data virtualization enables you to display data from many disparate sources and platforms in one application or interface. You can access real-time data from a variety of sources—whether a data warehouse, cloud platform, database, or even an Excel® spreadsheet—in a single virtual view, without the need for duplication. It’s useful for business intelligence and analytics, application development, self-service web tools, and data warehousing.
- Data movement (including synchronization, migration, and replication) is the ability to move data from one place in your organization to another. Because your organization's IT infrastructure and application landscape are continuously changing, your applications need data from a range of databases. Data movement can help you shift data across your systems without impacting the performance of your sources. Common technologies include extract, transformation, load (ETL), extract, load, transform (ELT), data replication, and change data capture (CDC).
Key technical features
Seamless joins and views
CONNX Data Virtualization performs seamless joins between two or more supported disparate databases using ODBC, OLE DB, .NET, and JDBC®. With fast and efficient RMS access, CONNX creates a single metadata model spanning all data sources and applications requiring data access. It offers a unified, reusable framework for information access. To the user or application, data appears as if it existed in a single federated relational database.
Efficiency
The CONNX distributed SQL engine reduces the workload placed on the server by performing CPU-intensive operations where the CONNX client resides (Linux®, or Windows®, i.e., remote desktop, web and/or application server), while allowing the database engine to perform tasks for which it is best suited.
SQL Access
CONNX supports ANSI SQL operations, including Insert, Update, Select, and Delete, along with group by distinct and aggregate functions like AVG, MIN, MAX, SUM, and COUNT. It handles substring, string, date, conversion, and math functions, as well as nested inner and outer joins, subqueries, and correlated subqueries. Additionally, CONNX supports Unions and Insert/Select.
Data conversions
CONNX supports many data types and performs bidirectional data conversions for data updates and retrieval.
Security
The CONNX Data Dictionary (CDD) provides additional field- and table-level security by group or user, ensuring the security of sensitive information. CONNX also supports row level security with CONNX Views. Additionally, the CDD is encrypted to secure sensitive information.
Compliance
Count on ODBC Full Compliance (level 2), JDBC Type 3 Driver, OLE DB 2.5 Driver, .NET 2.0 Driver, and above.
Table redefinition
CONNX imports tables definitions directly from DBMS databases. And, the CDD supports multiple record layouts of the same DBMS, RMS, or Rdb file, based on a “record type” field.
Metadata import
CONNX imports metadata directly from COBOL copybooks and a CONNX Text Specification file format into a CONNX Data Dictionary file (CDD).
