Darmstadt, Germany, 3/25/2011

Software AG announced the extension of its University Relations Program to provide support in bringing university and student ideas and research to global IT markets. Now active in over 20 countries, the company’s University Relations Program enables educational institutes to provide cost effective, real work experience to all students by recreating a virtual economy on campus. The program provides access to practical work skills to students that would find it hard to secure a short term external workplace. The program is built around bringing “real economy” challenges onto campus and giving the students the training, skills and freedom to develop creative and innovative solutions. The extended program will further develop the best of these student solutions through thesis support, seeding capital and ultimately founding start-up enterprises.

The extension of the University Relations Program was announced to representatives of over 30 European universities at Software AG’s corporate headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany today. Together with the foundation of the “House of IT” in Darmstadt recently, this is a significant event in further promoting and strengthening the European software industry.

Software AG CEO, Karl-Heinz Streibich, “A strong software industry is fundamental to a modern economy. It provides both highly qualified, high-contribution employment and is the main driver of innovation in all industry sectors. Software AG is committed to further developing the industry in Europe and this extension of our University Relations Program, as was the establishment of the house of IT, is a concrete example of the importance we give this issue.”

Software AG has currently more than 300 academic relationships with universities and research institutions around the world. To date, over 6,000 students have been trained in service-oriented IT architectures and business process management expertise.

The goal of the extended program is to develop practical teaching projects to a more strategic partnership level focused on support of Bachelor's and Master's thesis, joint research projects on industry-specific solutions and collaboration in bringing these solutions to market. The Hamburg-Harburg University of Technology is a case in point where students have already developed a container-logistics solution. The program now offers the possibility of establishing a Process Excellence Center on campus to bring such solutions to IT markets.

Also being announced is the availability of the ARIS Education Package including teaching facilities, lectures, exercises and seminars in business process management built around a realistic scenario based on a virtual IT-consulting firm.

“Universities are finding it increasingly difficult to place all students in external, high quality work experience positions, said Juergen Powik, Director of University Relations at  Software AG. “Our program is designed to create a virtual economy on campus and bring real economy issues and experiences to the students. It is a very cost effective way for universities to provide practical experience to students and we are delighted that we can now help turn excellent ideas into market successes.”
