SemanticGov built the infrastructure (software, models, services, etc) necessary for enabling the offering of Semantic Web Services by public administration (PA). Through this cutting edge infrastructure, SemanticGov addressed longstanding challenges faced by public administrations such as achieving interoperability amongst PA agencies both within a country as well as amongst countries, easing the discovery of PA services by its customers, facilitating the execution of complex services often involving multiple PA agencies in inter-workflows.  More importantly, this infrastructure  exploited SemanticGov as an enabler for reengineering PA service provision.
To achieve this, the SemanticGov project capitalized on the Service Oriented Architectures paradigm, implemented through state-of-the-art Semantic Web Services technology and supported by rigorous and reusable public administration domain analysis and modeling, while being in line with all major European programs and initiatives in the field e.g. the European Interoperability Framework and the recent work conducted by the EU IDABC Program, the i2010 group of Member States representatives and the Competitiveness & Innovation (CIP) Programme.

In the SemanticGov project a fully transactional semantic portal has been developed, which:

  • helps citizens and businesses discover the public services which address their needs and personalize these services according to their profiles through a user-friendly, self-explanatory interface that offers them the necessary guidance throughout the process
  • informs citizens and businesses about their eligibility for a specific public service
  • provides complete and well-structured information for the identified service
  • allows citizens and businesses to invoke public services that are available online.
